A Creamy Italian Dessert You Can Easily Make at Home

Panna Cotta is a classic Italian dessert known for its smooth, silky texture and delicate vanilla flavor. Despite its elegant appearance, it requires only a handful of ingredients and minimal cooking. This homemade version is perfect for dinner parties, family celebrations, or whenever you’re craving a light yet indulgent dessert. Serve it with fresh berries, fruit sauce, or a drizzle of caramel for a beautiful finishing touch.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2¼ teaspoons unflavored gelatin powder
  • 3 tablespoons cold water

For Topping (Optional)

  • Fresh strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Mixed berry sauce
  • Mint leaves
  • Honey or caramel sauce

Instructions

Step 1: Bloom the Gelatin

Pour the cold water into a small bowl and sprinkle the gelatin evenly over the surface. Let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until the gelatin absorbs the water.

Step 2: Heat the Cream Mixture

In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, and sugar. Heat over medium-low heat while stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves completely. Do not let the mixture boil.

Step 3: Add Vanilla

Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 4: Dissolve the Gelatin

Add the bloomed gelatin to the warm cream mixture. Stir gently until the gelatin dissolves completely and the mixture becomes smooth.

Step 5: Fill the Molds

Pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into serving glasses, ramekins, or silicone molds to ensure an extra-smooth texture.

Step 6: Chill

Allow the dessert to cool slightly, then refrigerate for at least 4 to 6 hours or until fully set.

Step 7: Serve

Serve directly in glasses or gently unmold onto dessert plates. Garnish with fresh berries, berry sauce, mint leaves, or caramel before serving.

Tips for Perfect Panna Cotta

  • Avoid boiling the cream to maintain a smooth texture.
  • Strain the mixture before pouring into molds for an ultra-silky finish.
  • Chill long enough for the dessert to set completely.
  • Silicone molds make unmolding much easier.
  • Fresh fruit adds color, freshness, and natural sweetness.

Variations

Chocolate Panna Cotta

Add 100 g melted dark chocolate to the warm cream mixture.

Coffee Panna Cotta

Dissolve 2 teaspoons of instant coffee in the warm cream before adding the gelatin.

Mango Panna Cotta

Top with fresh mango puree after the dessert has chilled.

Coconut Panna Cotta

Replace half of the cream with coconut milk for a tropical flavor.

Lemon Panna Cotta

Add 1 teaspoon of finely grated lemon zest for a refreshing citrus aroma.

Storage

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Avoid freezing, as it may affect the creamy texture after thawing.
