Ingredients
For the Smoothie Base
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries)
- 1 frozen ripe banana, sliced
- ½ cup plain Greek yogurt or thick natural yogurt
- ¼ cup milk or unsweetened almond milk
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup, optional
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
For Topping
- ¼ cup fresh mixed berries
- ½ banana, sliced
- 2 tablespoons granola
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 tablespoon sliced almonds or chopped nuts
- 1 teaspoon unsweetened coconut flakes, optional
Instructions
- Prepare the fruit: Use frozen berries and frozen banana for a naturally thick, chilled smoothie bowl. There is usually no need to add ice.
- Blend: Add the frozen mixed berries, banana, yogurt, milk, chia seeds, honey, and vanilla to a blender.
- Make it thick: Blend until smooth and creamy. Stop and scrape down the sides if necessary. Add another tablespoon or two of milk only if the mixture is too thick to blend.
- Serve: Spoon the smoothie into two bowls. The consistency should be thick enough to hold the toppings rather than being as thin as a regular drinking smoothie.
- Add toppings: Arrange fresh berries, banana slices, granola, chia seeds, almonds, and coconut flakes over the top.
- Enjoy immediately: Serve while cold for the best texture and flavor.
Helpful Tips
For a thicker smoothie bowl, keep both the berries and banana frozen and use as little liquid as possible. For a dairy-free version, replace Greek yogurt and milk with unsweetened plant-based alternatives. If your banana is very ripe, taste the smoothie before adding honey because the fruit may provide enough sweetness naturally.
Easy Variations
Protein Berry Bowl: Add a spoonful of your preferred protein powder or extra Greek yogurt.
Tropical Berry Bowl: Blend in a small amount of frozen mango or pineapple.
Nutty Berry Bowl: Add a tablespoon of unsweetened peanut or almond butter.
Oat Berry Bowl: Blend in 2 tablespoons of rolled oats for a more filling breakfast.
Storage
This smoothie bowl is best eaten immediately. If necessary, the blended base can be refrigerated in a covered container for up to 24 hours, but it may become thinner as the frozen fruit melts. Add granola and other crunchy toppings only when serving.
Nutrition Note
Mixed berries provide fruit-based nutrients and fiber, while yogurt, chia seeds, and nuts can add protein, healthy fats, and texture. Exact nutrition will vary depending on the ingredients and toppings used.
